Modern production involves a division of labour meaning each person has a specific role in producing items. Without people being taught these skills there would be a 'skills crisis'.

The idea that you can get ahead in society by your own merit and that the opportunity to achieve is equal to all.

The main function of education is to shift and sort young people in terms of their talents and abilities then allocate them a role in society. People then compete for best jobs

Criticisms of education

Aren't some school better than other giving some children an advantage ie. private and grammar. They transmitting values of the working class so we behave how they want us to. If school is so great why do people reject it.

What is the central principle of new right thinking ??

That state cannot meet peoples needs and that people are best left to meet their own needs through the free market.

In what ways are new right similar to functionalism

Some people are naturally more talented than others. Education should be based on meritocracy. Education should socialise people into shared values .

It fails to achieve the above goals. The current system is one size fits all and disregards the local needs. State education systems are unresponsive and breed inefficiency.

The marketisation of education meaning creating an education market. Creating competition and choice between schools will create higher standards and greater diversity.

Each family gets a voucher to spend on buying education. This will force schools to be more responsive to parents wishes as the voucher will be the schools main source of income.
