Sedimentary
Rock formed as pieces of older rocks and other loose materials get pressed or cemented together or as dissolved minerals re-form and build up in layers.
Metamorphic
Rock formed as heat or pressure causes existing rock to change in structure, texture or mineral composition.
Igneous
Rock that forms as molten rock cools and becomes a solid.
Extrusive
Igneous rock that forms when Lava cools on Earth’s surface
Intrusive
Igneous rock that forms when magma cools below Earth’s surface
Compaction
When sediments are deeply buried, placing them under pressure because of the weight of overlying layers. This squashes the grains together more tightly.
Deposition
The process in which transported sediment is laid down.
Cementation
Where new materials stick the grains together
Erosion
The process in which sediment is picked up and moved from one place to another
Mechanical Weathering
The breakdown of rock into smaller pieces of the same material without any change in its composition.
Chemical Weathering
The breakdown or decomposition of rock that takes place when minerals change through chemical processes.
