Color
The easiest property to observe
Luster
The way that the surface of a mineral looks when it reflects light. Described as metallic or non-metallic
Opaque
Does not allow light to pass through
Translucent
Allows light to pass through but not able to be seen clearly
Transparent
Able to be seen through
Hardness
A measure of how easily the mineral can be scratched. Based on a scale of 1 - 10 with 1 the softest and 10 the hardest.
Streak
The color that is observed when you scratch a mineral against a streak plate (not necessarily the mineral's color)
Cleavage
The splitting along planes which leaves smooth surfaces
Texture
How the mineral feels upon touch (for example: coarse or fine)
Magnetic
A material which is attracted by a magnet
Electrical conductivity
If and how easily electricity will pass through a material
