(English Literature) Why is the story spread over three years when the trial of Tom Robinson - the main event - takes just one day?
Although the trial is the core of the novel, it is what it means in the lives of the Finch family - as well as what it means to the town - that make it so interesting. Its repercussions are also important: Mr Ewell's bitter revenge has consequences as large as the trial itself.
(English Literature) Why are we told about Jem's broken arm at the start of the novel when the attack does not occur until the end?
Suspense is gradually heightened as events happen quickly, one after the other. We can't wait to see what happens! If the events were more spread out, they would lose their significance and the tension of the narrative would be lost.
(English Literature) Why is it important that we learn about Boo before we learn about Tom?
Both Boo and Tom live apart from everyday life in Maycomb and are 'good'. They harm no one, but few people understand them and value them. In contrast, the Ewells are more involved in the community but are evil. Their lives - and deaths - become bound up together.
(English Literature) What is Dill's contribution to the plot?
Because he is an outsider to Maycomb, he has ideas that Jem and Scout never thought of, like making Boo Radley come out. More importantly, though, he is another character who has suffered as a result of other people's actions, so it is interesting to compare him to Boo and Tom.
(English Literature) "He ain't company, Cal, he's just a Cunningham."
- Scout Finch
(English Literature) "There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time."
- Boo Radley
(English Literature) "Mr Finch, if you was a ****** like me, you'd be scared, too."
- Tom Robinson

(English Literature) Why did Birling sack Eva Smith?
Although Birling admits that she was a good worker, he sacked Eva Smith because she was involved in a strike asking for higher wages.
(English Literature) Why did Eva Smith lose her job at Milwards?
Sheila Birling thought that Eva was laughing at her because the dress she tried on didn't suit her. She insisted that Eva should be fired. She threatened that the Birlings would close their account at Milwards if the manager didn't fire Eva.
(English Literature) How did Gerald Croft know Daisy Renton?
She was his mistress for some time after he 'rescued' her from the clutches of Alderman Meggarty at the Variety Theatre.
(English Literature) Who went to the Brumley Women's Charity Organisation because she was pregnant, single and needed financial help?
A bit of a trick question! It was Daisy or Eva, calling herself Mrs Birling. The real Mrs Birling made sure she was refused help for being so impudent as to use the family name.
(English Literature) Who was the father of the dead girl's child?
Eric. She refused to marry him because she knew he didn't love her and stopped accepting money from him when she realised it was stolen.

Human red blood cells do not have a nucleus.
(Biology) What is diffusion?
Diffusion involves the movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration.
(Biology) Which change would NOT speed up diffusion in an animal cell?
Making the cell membrane thinner and moving the blood supply closer would speed up diffusion.
(Biology) Which substance moves out of respiring cells?
Carbon dioxide.
(Biology) How are bacterial cells different from animal cells?
Bacterial cells have a cell wall and no nucleus; animal cells have a nucleus but no cell wall.
