What is asthma?
A disease of the lungs in which muscle spams, and the production of excessive mucus causes obstruction of the bronchioles.
What is carbon dioxide retention?
A condition in which chronically high levels of co2 in the blood results in the body's respiratory center no longer responding to increased levels of co2.
What condition typically leads to carbon dioxide retention?
COPD
What is COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
A chronic deterioration of lung function due to chronic bronchial obstruction.
What are the two primary factors contributing to COPD?
Bronchitis and emphysema.
What are crackles?
Crackling, rattling breath sounds indicating fluid in the lungs.
What is croup?
An infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract that causes partial airway obstruction and characterized by a barking cough. Usually seen in children.
What is diphtheria?
An infectious disease in which an air way obstructing membrane forms in the pharynx.
What is dypnea?
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
What is an embolus (embolism)?
A blood clot that breaks off, travels to another part of the body and causes a blockage.
What is emphysema?
A disease of the lungs in which there is extreme dilation and eventual destruction of the pulmonary alveoli with reduced gas exchange. One form of COPD.
What is epiglottitis?
Inflammation of the epiglottis.
What is hyperventalation?
Rapid and/or deep breathing that results in lowered co2 levels.
What is hypoxia?
A condition in which the body's tissues have an insufficient supply of oxygen.
What is hypoxic drive?
A secondary drive for the regulation of respiration based on oxygen levels rather than co2 levels.
What is pleural effusion?
The accumulation of fluid between the lung and chest wall that can compress and collapse the lung.
What is pleuritic chest pain?
Sharp stabbing pain in the chest that is aggravated by deep breaths or other chest movements. Caused by inflammation or irritation of the pleura.
What is pneumonia?
An infectious disease of the lung that damages lung tissue.
What is a pneumothorax?
The accumulation of air in the pleural space.
What is pulmonary edema?
The buildup of fluids in the lungs, usually as a result of congestive heart failure.
What is a pulmonary embolism?
A blood clot that breaks off elsewhere in the body and becomes lodged in a pulmonary blood vessel.
What is rhonchi?
Course breath sounds heard in patients with chronic mucus in the airways.
What is SARS (severs acute respiratory syndrome)?
A potentially life threatening viral infection that starts with flu like symptoms.
What is stridor?
A harsh, high pitched, barking sound on inspiration. Often heard with acute upper airway (laryngeal) obstruction.
What is wheezing?
A high pitched, whistling breath sound characteristically found in patients with asthma or COPD.
