Random Sample

Every Person in a given target population has an equal chance of being selected. Its necessary to have a list of every person in a target population

Self selected sample

A sample who volunteer/ put themselves forward often through advertisement

Oppurtunity Sample

Researcher selecting anyone who is available ad willing to take part in the research

Random Sampling Advantage

Sample is representative as everyone had an equal chance of being selected.. generalisble

Random Sampling Disadvantage

Difficult to obtain a list of all target population so some psychologists argue its impossible to achieve a truly random sample

Self selected Sample Advantage

representative as anyone can apply to participate so representative

Self selected sample disadvantage

Only certain types of people will volunteer themselves therefore results are likely to be biased to one type of person...less generaliable

Opportunity Sample Advantage

Quick and easy to do as pps are available so its economical for researchers

Opportunity Sample Disadvantage

pps are likely to have similar backgrounds.. not representative of different groups of people..not generalisable
