Opportunity

Participants are selected by using people who are most easily available.


Strengths: Quick & easy to collect.


Weaknesses: Biased, as most participants are the same so it won't be representative of the population.

Volunteer

Participants are selected by asking for volunteers e.g. placing an ad in the newspaper.


Strengths: Can access a motivated section of the population.


Weaknesses: Tends to attract a specific type of person making data biased.

Random

Participants are selected by using a random number technique.


Strengths: Unbiased as everyone has an equal chance of getting picked.


Weaknesses: May result in a freak sample which isn't representative. E.g. 100% Boys, 0% Girls

Quota/Stratified

Sub-Groups within a population are identified, then a predetermined number is taken from each proportion to their representation.


Strengths: More representative of the population.


Weaknesses: Selection within sub-groups may be biased.

Snowball

Getting one or two participants & having them pull in more participants.


Strengths: Good for collecting participants that are hard to identify.


Weaknesses: May take a long time to collect.
