A mental picture of something or someone that is held by an individual or the public. The way one looks at something, how one perceives another, or how one understands reality. Images change due to experiences, attitudes, and feelings. The closer the image comes to reality, the better the image. A guiding image is what one strives for. It changes the way one views the church.
Body of Christ as St.Paul's image of the Church
Used the image of the body to symbolize the relationship between Christ and his Church. He focuses on both our unity with Christ and with one another, and on our diversity as unique members, each called to contribute individually to Christ's mission.The Holy Spirit is in all of us and unites us yet makes us diverse. As a community we form one body and one spirit because the church is made up of all different individuals, but united in faith. St. Paul's image used unity and diversity as how the community of the Church can grow stronger.
Council of Jerusalem and its consequences
Tried to resolve the dispute over observance of Mosaic Law and Gentile converts. Gentiles were not required to observe the Law and a split between Jews and Christians resulted. Peter and James practiced Jewish law then converted. Paul was put to prison. Council decided to define Christianity in terms of union with Christ, independent of the practice of Jewish law therefor there was a split. After the split, there was a persecution by both Romans and some Jews.

Ignatius of Antioch
The third bishop of Antioch and a witness of Christ during the time when martyrdom was in action. Served for 40 years when ordered to be torn apart by beasts in Rome. During his journey to Rome he sent letters to different churches thanking them for encouraging him to stay faithful. He told Christians of Rome not to prevent his martyrdom because he he is going to become one with the body of Christ.
Constantine
When going into battle he saw a cross in the sky with the Greek inscription "In this sign, you will conquer." With the victory of the battle he made Christianity legal with the Edict of Milan. As a result, by year 400, more then one-half of the Roman empire were Christian. After he died the clergy were exempt from taxes, Christian symbols appeared on coins, and Church courts were recognized as valid.
Monasticism in the West
The first followers were called hermits. These people withdrew themselves from society in order to make their relationship with God grow stronger. There were communities of hermits based on strict obedience to a superior. Monasticism grew quickly but suddenly it became a divider between the hermits and ordinary Christians.
Charlegmagne
Made Christianity the religion of the west. He established many schools, libraries, and seminaries. Very strict, all lawbreakers were punished. He created dioceses by unifying smaller nations into a larger one. Stated the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father AND the Son instead of the Father THROUGH the Son.
Thomas Aquinas
Called the "dumb ox" by fellow classmates. He created a system of Christian knowledge and theology. Named the intellectual giant and wrote about faith and reason.
Martin Luther
He was a law student who wrote a variety of books. After he was nearly killed in a thunderstorm he decided to become a monk. He was afraid of sin and suffered from his sins because he did not believe he was resolved. He was in charge of the Wittenberg School of Divinity.
John Calvin
John Calvin: The second greatest reformer who was a prophet with a mission. He converted from lutheran to protestant. Wrote doctrine saying God was in control of all and was denied to papacy. first was banished but then 4 years later he continued and ran the state. If one criticized him they would be exiled. All feared his God.
Ignatius of Loyola
A spanish solider knight who founded the Jesuits. He organized an elite corps of disciplined scholars and missionaries. He was a model of faith and holiness.
Council of Trent
Reformed and placed Church on the defensive. Included many religious wars, revolution, and change. The wars were ended with the peace of Westphalia. The north were mostly Protestant and the south were mostly Catholic.
John XXII
Great pope who made great changes! He redefined the Church with Vatican 2. He changed masses from Latin into your own language. He turned around the mass so that the clergy were facing the laity. Led the Church into a modern age and was open to change.
Vatican II
Masses went from Latin into your own language and the Church was turned around so that the clergy were facing the laity.
Evangelization
Brings good news to all people sharing God's universal mission. The mission was to be spread through words and actions. To sanctify, teach, and lead peopel to God through loving service. It is needed by all, makes us stronger, and helps our faith grow stronger.
