Sanctity of Life

Most religions believe humans are created in the image of God and therefore life is special.



Christianity:


The church teaches that life is a sacred gift from God.


"Let us make man in our image"



Islam:


Life is sacred and special and should be taken care of.


"Only Allah can give and take life"

Medical Ethics

Sometimes having a religious beliefs can help when making life and death decisions.


However...


some medical advances weren't around when religious texts were written.


In this case they may:


•search sacred texts or pray


•speak to religious leaders


•weigh up pros and cons


Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering- using the techniques of molecular cloning to alter the structure of genes.



Christianity:


Man has no right to play God but if God gave us talents we should use them.



Islam:


The design and creation is Allah's responsibility. You shouldn't interfere with Allah's plan.


Abortion

Christianity:


Christians believe in the sanctity of life, humans are made in the image of God.


Roman Catholics- teaching is that the foetus is a human being and life begins at conception, therefore it is forbidden and it is like murder.



Islam:


Abortion is unwelcomed however will be allowed if the foetus has not developed yet before 17 weeks (3-4 months). If the mothers or baby's life is in danger, the baby will be seriously handicapped or disabled.

Euthanasia

Christianity:


The Bible teaches that life is sacred


"Your body is a temple of the holy spirit"


Christians believe it is wrong to take life "You shall not murder"



Islam:


Totally opposed to euthanasia. Allah created all life and everything belongs to him


"To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the Earth. He creates what he pleases"


"Destroy not yourself, surely Allah is ever merciful to you"


IVF

Christianity:


Roman Catholics opposed to IVF because infertility is a call from God to adopt children.


Embryos are seen as life and spare embryos are destroyed.



Islam:


IVF is acceptable for many Muslims if sperm and egg of the couple are used. Anything else is viewed as adultery.
