What is the purpose of balancing in reciprocating machines? |
To minimise alternating forces and moments |
Remember how to model reciprocating machines |
What are the technicalities when balancing reciprocating machines ? |
1. The slider is the only bit with any mass>>not true for relaxation engines<< 2. For balancing purposes, mass of crankshaft does not matter because it can be done easily 3. The con-rod is modelled as two masses concentrated at the ends joined by a rigid massless link 4. Mass at crankshaft end moves in circle and can be regarded as part of crankshaft>>easily balanced by adding a bit more mass to opposite side of crankshaft<< 5. Mass at piston end added to mass of piston for balancing purposes |
Remember Lanchester balance? |
Explain Lanchester balance |
1. Use two out of balance masses on the shafts rotating in opposite directions 2. The components of the rotating out of balances in the stroke direction cancels out the primary force 3. The components of the rotating out of balances at right angles to the stroke direction cancel out each other |
