Function of the iris? (in the eye) |
Has muscles which control the amount of light that enters the eye. |
|
How is the pupil and iris related? |
Iris is the circle bit around the pupil. Iris muscles control the size of the pupil. Pupil is the black dot through which light enters the eye. |

Pacinian corpuscles are mechanoreceptors. What are mechanoreceptors? |
Detect mechanical stimuli e.g. pressure, vibrations |
|
Explain which of these will produce a bigger generator potential? Punching someone Touching someone gently |
Punching someone • stronger stimulus -> excites the membrane more • bigger movement of ions • bigger change in PD across the cell membrane -> bigger generator potential |
|
In simple terms, describe the sequence of events that leads to a generator potential? |
• stimulus detected • cell membrane excited -> becomes more permeable (ion channels open) • influx of +ve ions (such as Na+) • this alters the pd across the cell membrane |
|
What is meant by a cell being in its resting state? |
The cell is not being stimulated |
|
Role of receptors? |
Convert the energy of the stimulus into electrical energy (an impulse) |
