R22 Emergency Procedures

Define: Land Immediately

Back 1

Land on the nearest clear area
where a safe / normal landing can be performed.

Be prepared to enter autorotation

Define: Land as soon as practical

Back 2

Land at the nearest airport or facility where emergency maintainence can be performed.

Engine failure in flight

Back 3

Enter autorotation
Select landing area (5 S's)
Call -
Mayday. Mayday. Mayday.
G-Bravo-Sierra at <location> engine failed, making forced landing, .
Simulate fuel off,
master battery off
At 500 feet
Passenger warning: Brace. Brace. Brace.
Engine off landing

Enter autorotation

Back 4

Down collective, full right pedal.
Straight and level in trim @ 60 KIAS
RRPM in green

Front 5

Control RRPM in autorotation

Back 5

RPM high - up collective
RPM low - down collective

Front 6

Steep turns in autorotation

Back 6

Roll into steep turn - up collective
Roll out of steep turn - down collective
Keep RRPM in green

Front 7

Landing in autorotation

Back 7

At 40 feet
Aft cyclic for flare.
Check RRPM with collective.

At 8 feet
Forward cyclic to level ship.
Raise collective just before touchdown.
Touch down level with nose straight ahead

Maximum range autorotation

Back 8

75 KIAS
RRPM 90%

NB: Below 500 feet min 97% RRPM

Engine fire on ground

Back 9

Continue cranking (sucks flames and fuel in to carb)

If engine starts, run at 50-60% for a bit then shut down and inspect.

If engine does not start:
Shut off fuel and master battery
Extinguish fire with extinguisher, blanket or dirt.
Inspect for damage.

Engine fire in flight

Master battery - off
Alternator - off
Land Immediately
Extinguish fire and inspect.

Tachometer failure

Back 11

Use remaining tach to monitor RPM.
If unable, allow governor to control RPM and land as soon as practical.

NB Tachs are powered even master battery switch is off.

Governor failure

Back 12

Grip throttle firmly to override, then switch off governor. Complete flight using manual control.

Oil light on

Back 13

Check engine tach for power loss.
Check oil pressure gauge.
If pressure loss confirmed land immediately.

MR Temp,
MR chip
or TR chip light on

Back 14

If light accompanied by increased noise, vibration or temp rise, land immediately. Otherwise land as soon as practical.

Front 15

Low fuel light on

Back 15

Approx 1 gallon of fuel remaining, 5 mins of cruise power.

Front 16

Clutch light on

Back 16

If after 7 or 8 seconds of light on/flickering. Pull clutch circuit breaker and land immediately.

Front 17

Alt light on

Back 17

Possible alternator failure.
Turn off non-essential electrics.
Switch ALT off and back on after 1 second.
If light stays on land as soon as practical.

Brake light on

Back 18

Release immediately

STARTER light on

Back 19

If light does not go out when ignition released from start, immediately pull mixture to idle cut-off and turn master switch off.

Land immediately.
Extinguish fire and inspect for damage.
Open vents if time permits

Low RRPM HORN & Caution Light

Restore RRPM:
Roll throttle on
Lower collective

In forward flight, apply aft cyclic.

Air restart procedure

Back 24

Mixture - full rich
Throttle - closed, then cracked slightly
Actuate starter with left hand.
