When installing a new cluster what is the name of the first server you build?

Publisher

What are the CallManager servers called that are installed AFTER the Publisher?

Subscribers

What is the MAIN DIFFERENCE between a Publisher and a Subscriber?

A Subscriber pulls it's information from the Publisher.

.5

Comment: publisher is the only Read and Write, subscribers just Read.

What is the purpose of changing hostnames to IP addresses?

Removes the need for DSN-lookup services.

What is a Call Manager Group?

A group (primary, secondary, tertiary) of call managers that provide redundancy in the event one of the group fails.

What is a Device Pool?

A group of devices with shared properties.

How should you provision your Call Manager Groups from an enterprise perspective?

Comment: use CMG pairsie:SUB 1 (primary) - SUB 2 (2ndary)reverse this to ensure that phones can register to SUB 2 in its own CMG.

Where do you go to define the role(s)/Service(s) that will be active on each CallManager Server?

Cisco Serviceability Tools> Service activation.

What is the max number of supported devices per CLUSTER?

40,000

What do you need to do to make a server a 'call processing' server?

Comment: turn on the 'CallManager' service

Why do you need TFTP and how do you enable it in CallManager?

TFTP is used during the IP Phone Boot Process to provision devices with their configuration files. It is enabled using the Serviceability option from the drop down menu in Call Manager and then Tools -> Service Activation.

What are at least three required configurations needed in a DHCP Pool?

Option 150 NetworkDefault Gateway

How does a phone find where the DHCP Server resides?

It utilizes the helper IP address assigned to its local gateway.

Name at least 3 required mandatory configurations when configuring a Device(Phone) in CallManager.

Device Protocol

MAC Address

Device Pool

Comment: device protocol? need to elaborate

After creating a phone in CUCM, what else needs to be configured in order to be able to call that phone?

The Line Number, Route Partition and Device Pool.

Explain the phone bootup process in as much detail as possible.

1) Phone is Powered from external power source. Ideally a POE Switch, but may also be a powered by individual power supply.

2) Using an IP Helper Address the phone obtains the address of the DHCP server.

3) DHCP server assigns an IP address to the phone and passed the location of the TFTP server.

4) The Phone connects to the TFTP server and obtains its configuration files from the TFTP server which it uses to register to the Call Manager Cluster.

5) The phone uses its MAC address to register to its subscriber.

Comment: missing a step (how the config file gets generated in the first place)

Why do we need to create a voice vlan?

Creating a voice VLAN separates voice traffic from data traffic which enables QoS and RTP required for voice calls.

What protocol is used for communication between Callmanager and your Phone(s)?

SCCP

What are CSS's and Partitions? In detail, describe the relationship between these two components.

A CSS is a list of partitions. Partitions are used to manage calling privileges by phones. Partitions are part of Route Patterns, which are part of Route List, which in turn are part of Route Groups. In order for a phone to place a call it must be allowed to dial a number that is defined by its CSS.

When checking a phone you realize that it is registered to the WRONG Subscriber. What would you check/change in the DEVICE POOL to fix this?

Check to ensure the phone is registered to the correct Device Pool and if so that the Call Manager Group is registered to the correct subscriber.

Directory number 1000 has the partition "A_Phone" assigned to it. The same directory number was created again but has the partition "B_Phone" assigned to it. Which line would ring if a device using a CSS which contains partitions (in order) B_Phone and then A_Phone tried to dial 1000?

B_phone

What items in CUCM do you assign partitions to? (Name 2)

Lines and Route Partitions

How would you create/name CSS' and Partitions if you had multiples sites in your environment?

Develop and adhere to a naming convention that depicts each site.

Where in the CUCM menus do you configure Partitions and Calling Search Spaces?

Call routing -> Class of control

What is the behavior of the "" Partition and CSS?

<NONE>is a null partition that exist on every CSS. If a phone has the partition assigned to it, every phone will be able to call it, because every CSS has the <NONE> partition.

What is the relationship between partitions and calling search spaces?

Calling Search Spaces are composed of Partitions. Partitions can be thought of as labels that are applied to Devices, Trunks, Gateways and Numbers.

How are partition and calling search space names selected?

Names should be selected based on a well-defined naming convention.

Why would we want to re-order the partitions in a Calling Search Space?

To prioritize which numbers are dialed first, i.e. 911

What happens when you try to complete a call to a number that does not contain the correct partition in the calling devices CSS?

The call will fail.

What are the 3 main voice signaling protocols used by Cisco?

H323

MGCP

SIP

What are some unique characteristics of MGCP?

MGCP uses CUCM to handle the signaling aspects of the call.

What needs to be configured in CUCM for an MGCP gateway to be able to register with CUCM?

We need to tell CUCM where to find the gateway we want to use and which VWIC to use.

Comment: also need the hostname of the gateway (explicitly defined).

What are the two commands needed in the router in order for it to grab its MGCP configuration from CUCM?

Comment:

ccm-manager

config server <ip address of pub/sub>

What command can you use on the gateway to verify that an MGCP gateway is registered to CUCM?

show ccm-manager

What are Route Patterns used for?

Route Patterns are used to define which numbers may be dialed from a CSS. Route Pattern have Partitions applied to them which are use to create a CSS, which in turn is applied to a device such as a phone.

What is a Route Group and what are the two possible distribution algorithms you can use?

A Route group contains Route List and directs calls toward a gateway or trunk.

The two distribution algorithms that can be employed are Top Down and Circular.

Top Down is used when we have a primary and back up gateway/s

Circular is used for load balancing purposes.

Comment: route groups contains gateways or trunks, Route LIST contains route groups, not the other way around.

What is a Route List, and what do we need to configure within it?

Route list are where we can configure which CMG to use to process our calls and which Route Group to use.

A company forces every user to dial a "9" then the actual number they are trying to dial for outbound calls. The Gateway does not accept the "9" and only cares to see the "Real digits dialed". What do we need to configure to ensure the "9" does not get sent the gateway from CUCM.

We need to use Pre-Dot in the route pattern.

Where/what can we go/do to pull up specific information about a current call?

Comment: on the phone itself you can double click/press the ? button on the phone to get codec used, how many byes, etc.

What are Regions, and typically what do we set for calls traversing the WAN?

Region Settings control the codec used between different regions.

What are Locations, and what types of calls are affected by Locations?

Locations can be used to regulate available bandwidth at specific locals.

Comment: affect WAN calls

How are Regions and Locations associated with each other?

Regions control the codecs used during a call, Locations determine the bandwidth available for that call.

What are the two most typical Codecs used in VoIP environments?

g729

g711

How much bandwidth do the two most common codecs use when considering Locations (including overhead)?

G729 uses 24 Kb/s

G711 uses 80 kb/s

Once we create Regions and Locations where do we apply these settings to?

Region and Location settings are applied to the Device Pools.

What is AAR, and why would a company deploy this?

Automated Alternate Routing will reroute a call through the PSTN in the event that there is not enough bandwidth to place a call through our network.

What is AAR, and why would a company deploy this?

Automated Alternate Routing will reroute a call through the PSTN in the event that there is not enough bandwidth to place a call through our network.

What do we use for the "Device Name" when configuring an H323 Gateway?

IP Address of the gateway we are connecting to.

Where do we "bind" our H323 signaling to on the gateway?

Comment: loopback

What is a "Voice Class Codec" Used for?

Setting up a group of codecs that defines which codecs to use and the order (preference) to use of them.

What two types of Dial-Peers exist? What are the differences between the two?

dial-peer voice pots or dial-peer voice voip.

POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service and is the older of the two. Its calls are routed through the PSTN network.

VoIP Stands for Voice over IP. It uses packets to deliver its data, so calls can be routed over a WAN.

If a call originates from the PSTN, what type of dial-peer would we use to "catch" the call coming into our network?

A broadly defined dial peer such as:

dial-peer voice 1 pots

incoming called-number .

the " ." is a wildcard that will allow all calls to enter our network since any number will match.

Formulate an Outbound POTS Dial-peer for all Long Distance Calls (Please be specific).

dial-peer voice 2 pots

destination pattern 91[2-9]..[2-9]......

forward digits 11

CommentsComment: forgot the port command

dial-peer voice 6 pots description >> POTS LONG-D<<

destination-pattern 91[2-9].........

direct-inward-dial

port 1/0:23 forward-digits 11

How many call legs does any typical call have? What are the official names of these call legs defined as?

Every call has inbound and outbound call legs. The total number of call legs will depend on the topology of the network being used, every gateway traversed will add a hop to the call. For a call going passing through a gateway, traveling over a PSTN and entering a network the number of call legs would total 4.

Comment: only 2 legs to each call, an inbound and outbound leg.To put it in perspective, if a call comes into our network it can only come in one time per call (so 1 leg), next once it hits our network it can only again send this specific call to its destination (1 time). While there can be multiple hops for a call once it enters into our network it only enters into our network once, and routes through it once (per call).

What is the purpose of a Call Pickup Group?

A call pickup group allows users in the same group to receive calls to other users in the same pickup group by pressing a soft-key.

What are the three configurations that make up a Hunt Group?

Hunt Pilot

Hunt List

Line Group

In the Line Group what do we typically associate to this piece of configuration?

Digit manipulation and Extensions.

What is Extension Mobility, and how do we enable the ability to use it?

Extension Mobility allows a user to have a mobile profile that they can access via login. They will then be reachable at their extension and have access to all of their regular features regardless of their physical location.'

Comment: did not answer the 2nd half of the question

When configuring Extension Mobility where do we go in CUCM to input all of the required configuration and URL information?Under the Administration tab in Device Settings.

Comment: Device \ Device settings \ phone services

After Extension Mobility has been created, how do we activate the service for a particular user?

Subscribe the user to Extension Mobility.

From a phone, how do we log onto Extension Mobility ?

Press the services button, login using user ID and pin.

What do we need to set to allow a phone to revert back to its normal configurations after we are done using Extension Mobility on a particular device?

Comment: you will need a default profile

What are some troubleshooting steps to take if a user tries to log into Extension Mobilty and Sees a "404" error?

Comment: check the URL in the phone settings, along with the URL in enterprise parameters

What Media Resources can you create on a Router?

Conference Bridge

Media Termination Point

Transcoder

Music on Hold

What are the two categories of media resources? Give one major difference between the two.

=Software-based and hardware-based.

Comment:

hdwe = PVDM/DSP

Software = CPU

What is a DSP and where do you find them in a voice environment?

Digital Signal Processors are found as hardware modules in PVDM sticks located in routers.

You have been tasked to verify if the MAC address configured on a Conferencing resource in CUCM is correct. Where would you look, and what command would you use?

Look in the interface being used:

show interface XX

What are PVDMs, where do you install them?

Packet Voice DSP Modules are installed in routers.

What is an MRG? What is an MRGL? Where do you apply an MRGL?

Media Resource Group, Media Resource Group List.

Media Resource Group List are used to define the order in which MRGs will be used.

Comment: did not answer last part of this question.

Before hardware Media Resources can register to CUCM, what configuration/Protocol is needed on the gateway?

SCCP

To be able to utilize CUCM software built Media Resources what Service needs to be turned on?. How many Media resources does CUCM build by default when you activate that Service?

Media Application Services must be turned on.4 Services are built.

Comment: cisco ip media streaming app service, and which 4 get built?
