What is a pure substance

Contain only one thing

How can you test for purity

Using melting points if it sure it will have one specific shop melting and boiling point

Describe experiment simple distillation

Pour sample of seawater in the bottom of distillation flask

set up a thermometer at the top condenser attached to it and the flask at the bottom of the condenser

run cold water through condenser to keep it cool

Heat the distillation flask gradually

the substance with the lowest boiling point will evaporate first

water vapour passing through condenser will condense and go into beakers where it’s collected

Describe experiment for fractional distillation

Put mixture into the flask attach a fractionating column with thermometer and condenser

heat flask

liquid with the lowest boiling point will evaporate first when the temp on the thermometer matches the boiling point of this liquid

liquids with higher boiling points might start to evaporate but the column is cooler towards the top so they will only get part of the way up before condensing and running back down towards the flask
