blood flow in the pulmonary and systemic circuit is...
EQUAL (5000ml/min)

despite great difference in pressure
why blood flow is the same in systemic and pulmonary circuit despite low pressure in the latter?
LOW VASCULAR RESISTANCE

good to have a low blood pressure in pulmonary vessels
patient with COPD have trouble laying horizontally...why? supine position??
horizontal: decrease in area of O2 diffusion
supine: decrease mobility of the diaphragm
pulmonary v.s. systemic vessels (structural)
pulmonary vessels:
1. thinner walls and elastic with diminished tendency to contract
pulmonary v.s. systemic vessels (in response to hypoxia)
pulmonary: constrict in response to local hypoxia
systemic: dilate to bring more O2 to tissue
pulmonary v.s. systemic vessels (in response to pressure)
pulmonary: DILATE in response to increasing intraluminal pressure and cardiac output
systemic: CONSTRICT
