Dry to dry

Application of a dry absorbent or nonabsorbent dressing to cover a wound

Damp to damp

Application of a gauze pad moistened with normal saline solution before application.

Remoistening is performed while the dressing remains in place.

Prevents dressing from drying out and becoming embedded in eschar

Damp to dry

Application of a moistened dressing that is allowed to dry before removal.

Dressing dries embedded in eschar and debrides the wound

Hydrogels

Clear, non-medicated dressing that provides moisture.

Usually requires secondary dressing (puts moisture into wound)

Good for:

Slough

Necrotic

Low/Mod exudate

Dry & Minimal draining

Stage III ulcers

Stage IV ulcers

Burns

Surgical wounds

Not good for active patients

Hydrocolloids

Occlusive dressing that promotes autolytic debridement.

Good for:

Slough

Necrotic

Low/Mod exudate

Dry & Minimal draining

Stage I ulcers

Stage III ulcers

Not for infected wounds

Alginates

Absorptive, dry dressing that transforms into a gel on contact with wound exudates.

Must have a secondary dressing

Good for:

Infection

Granulating

Epithelializing

Slough

Mod/Heavy exudate

Use short term, only until sloughing is complete

Skin barriers

Moisture barriers.

Cream or spray to prevent maceration.

Semi-Permeable Films

Thin, semi-permeable, semi-adhesive dressing.

Often used as a secondary dressing, but can be primary.

Promotes autolysis

Good for:

Granulating

Epithelializing

Low/Mod exudate

Minimal drainage

Stage I ulcers

Stage II ulcers

Non-draining surgical wounds

Requires intact periwound skin for adhesive edge. Best secondary dressing!

Semi-Permeable Foams

Conforms to wounds, filler.

Many are bacteria proof.

Good for:

Granulating

Mod/Heavy exudate

Not for infected wounds, may require secondary dressing

Occlusive

Applied to provide a semipermeable barrier to air and moisture penetration

Wound fillers

Materials designed to fill cavities and manage wound drainage. Do not use if tunneling is present

Good for:

Infection

Epithelializing

Mod/Heavy exudate

Stage I-III ulcers without tunneling

Autolytic Debridement

Requires secondary dressing

Composites

Multilayer dressings good for most wounds

Good for:

Infection

Low-Heavy exudate

Stage I-IV ulcers without necrosis

Not for necrotic wounds, or wounds with fragile periwound skin

Specialty Absorptives

Multilayer, non-adhering dressings that can be used on all wound types, including infection. Requires a secondary dressing

Dressings that require secondary dressings

Alginates

Hydrogels

Semi-Permeable Foams (may need)

Wound Fillers

Specialty Absorptives
