Charles Spearman

Noticed that people "smart" in one area were often skilled in other areas, so he thought there was only 1 type of intelligence... called the g-factor

G-factor

a general intelligence factor that Spearman and others believed underlies specific mental abilities and is therefore measured by every task on an intelligence test.

L.L. Thurstaone (1930s)

made up 8 primary mental abilities... later his idea was copied and improved by Howard Gardner (in Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence's)

Reification

When we view an abstract concept as it if were a concrete thing, we have made the error of reification

aptitude test

a test designed to predict a persons future performance. aptitude refers to the capacity to learn.

achievement test

a test designed to assess what a person has already learned

factor analysis

a statistical procedure that identifies clusters of related items on a test; used to identify different dimensions of performance that underlie ones total score

criterion

the behavior that a test, such as the SAT, is designed to predict

heritability

the proportion of variation among individuals on a particular trait that can attributed to the differences in their genes.

reliability

the extent to which a test yields consistent results, as assessed by the consistency of scores on two halves of the test or on retesting at a later date

Validity

the extent to which a test measures or predicts what it is supposed to.

standardization

defining meaningful scores by comparison with the performance of a pretested "standardization group".

Face Validity

the extent to which questions on a test APPEAR to measure the construct of interest
