Donald Hebb
Noticed that some individuals engage in behaviors not neccessarily for homeostasis, some was for pleasure, motivation for arousal actually opposite of homeostasis. Developed Activation theory
Activation Theory
Donald Hebb theory, states that there is an optimal level of arousal neccessary to perform a task well. If arousal level is too high for a task, organism will seek behaviors to drop arousal. If arousal level is too low for a task, organism will seek behaviors to raise arousal. Engage in behavior to regulate optimal arousal.
Sensory Deprivation Studies
Activation Theory
1.Hebb interested in causes of arousal deprevation on brain. Took arousal away for a week to see what happened. Periodically sent in people to ask general knowledge questions, measure impacts on cognative deficits. Indiviuals unable to quickly perform cognative skills 2days, 3days-hallucinations, **concluded sensory deprevation aversive--brain will generate its own stimulation in absebce of external sensory experience (cause of hallucinations). Proof of arousal theory.
Sensory Deprivation Studies
(Melzack)
Interested in exploratory behavior. Raised half puppies in isolation, half normal. After 10 months, all dogs brought into room that was unfamiliar, but with toys. **animals raised in isolation, when introduced into new room, experimented more, for longer. ***conclusion--reduced environmental sensory stimulation, causes a craving, gave merit to Hebb's arousal theory.
Play behavior
Function and purpose of behavior to provide stimulation (arousal) in evolutionary behavior, stimulates the brain.

Reticular Activation System
Located within the brainstem, controls the sleep-wake cycle.
Reticular Activation System
(Mourzzi)
Put cats to sleep, stimulated different areas of brain, when got to RAS, caused desynchronization of brainwaves, animal acted like awake in brainwaves, then deepest possible sleep,***lead to realization the RAS controlled sleep-wake cycle.
Anxiety Studies
(Martens and Landers)
Interested in performance under arousal levels either too high or too low. Took junior high boys, told them to do the ring task found in dr.'s offices, told them they had to move the ring through without touching the sides (errors recorded when touched sides) boys classified high, mid, or low anxiety, randomly assn to groups, 1)no stress-told only monitored for body signs, not mistakes 2)mid stress, told if the made x amount of errors, they would receive a shock at end,3) high, told performance critical, x # of errors, they would recieve painful shock. Mid performed better. Activation from two perspectives-stress and anxiety--found the inverted U
