Why do we calibrate Pro Tools?

To match the levels of the HD I/O to that of a console or external device

What interfaces can we calibrate?

Both inputs and outputs

Process for Output Calibration

Process for Input Calibration

What versions of Pro Tools supports Surround Mixing?

Only PT HD

What are the main standards for 5.1 surround track layouts?

Film, SMPTE/ITU, DTS, ICON X-MON

Which 5.1 Standard is used in Studio 1?

Film

Which 5.1 standard is used in Studio 5?

SMPTE/ITU

How do we use I/O setup for surround?

Used to create multi-channel paths and sub-paths

What are the paths/sub-paths used for in Surround?

Gives a pathway for mono/stereo tracks to target and output on

What kind of multi-channel tracks can we create?

Stereo

What is surround panner used for?

Used to pan a mono signal between the L, C, R, Ls and Rs channels

How do we access a larger version of Surround Panner?

Through the multi-channel output window, accessed by clicking the fader icon above the automation drop menu

What is Center %?

Controls how much signal is routed to the centre channel

What is Divergence?

Divergence lets you control panning width

Full divergence...

Allows discrete panning to a single speaker

0% front divergence...

Will pan sound evenly between L, C and R

What are the panning modes?

Auto-glide

Divergence

X/Y

3-knob panning mode

X/Y Mode...

Is typical joystick-style panning

Auto-glide mode...

Lets you pan by clicking new locations in the panner grid. Panning position will glide from point to point using auto-glide time.

Divergence mode...

Lets you drag and resize the divergence X/Y grid boundaries

3-knob panning...

Lets you pan in straight lines between front and rear

What is the difference between multi-mono and multi-channel plug-ins?

Multi-mono plugs can be used on any track from mono to 7.1 channels.

Multi-channel plug-ins are used for correlated processing (stereo linked compression).

How do we link multi-channel tracks?

Go to the output window and press LINK

How do we invert the Front/Rear channels?

Access the output window, and press Front/Rear Inverse

Methods of drum sample augmentation?

Software

MIDI Triggers

Process of SOFTWARE drum augmentation

Inserting the 3rd Third Party software on the drum track

Process for MIDI augmentation

Purpose of MIDI Triggers

Precise replacement

Key Gates

Attack portion of signal

What 3rd party drum sample plug-in do we use in St.4?

Steven Slate Trigger 2

What are the basic controls of Steven Slate Trigger 2?

Attack, Sustain, Release, Dynamics, Velocity, Range, Suppression

Attack...

Sets the initial time it takes the envelope to reach its maximum level after it has been triggered

Sustain...

Fixed time that the envelope will stay at its maximum level after it has completed the attack phase

Release...

Envelope falls from its sustain level back to zero

Dynamics...

Increase/decrease dynamic range

Velocity...

Response of instruments

Range...

Limits velocities

Suppression...

Stops the plug-in from triggering certain leakages on a drum track

Uses for Melodyne, other than tuning vocals?

Thickens up instrumentation

Creates Harmonies

Amplitude

Finding the key of a song with MD

Go to Scale Detective

What is track list view?

Used so that you can see any track with Melodyne inserted. Allows you to see coloured blobs and grey blobs

Track Freeze...

Source material on tracks is replaced with audio that has been processed by all plug-ins on the track. Done to free up DSP. When frozen, all plug-ins are made inactive.

Benefits of Track Freeze...

Frees up DSP.

Done for exchanging sessions with systems that dont have the same plug ins

3rd Party Software

Plug-in that replaces acoustic drum tracks with your choice of other samples. Uses sensitivity for triggering based on transients

What gets frozen in Track Freeze?

Plug-ins and automation, except for FREEZE TO INSERT PLUGINS.

Clip Gain

Elastic Audio

How can we monitor system's performance in PT?

Assessing the CPU meters which shows elastic audio processing, clip gain processing, disk usage and memory usage.

Ways to improve performance in Pro-Tools?

Print inserts

Freeze tracks

Increase hardware buffer size, but only for mixing.

Consolidate heavy edits

Commit/print plug in effects

Dealing with Missing files

You would have to relink files using the relink window. See notes.
