what is an enzyme?
protein or RNA biological substance that acts as catalysts and help complex reactions occur everywhere in life
WHat is a catalyst?
a substance (enzyme) that can change the rate of a chemical reaction
What is a substrate?
biological molecule that the enzyme will work on
What is an active site and its job?
a pocket or group of the enzyme that fits around the substrate
What is the product?
is the changed substrate after catalysis
What is the catalysis
is the change in rate of a chemical reaction by reducing the amount of energy needed to start the reaction
How do enzymes work?
an enzyme and a substrate are in the same area. the enzyme grabs onto the substrate with its active site. Catalysis happens and the substrate is changed and broken down with other molecules to become something new
what 4 things can affect the way enzymes work. explain how they affect the enzyme
1.) temperature- if it changes, enzyme changes. messes up process and can't work
2.) activators make enzymes work harder and faster
3.) pH levels (measure of acidity)- acidity environment affects the shape, cant work
4.) inhibitors- slow down or stop enzyme. they bond ti the protein and the shape changes
