What is peptidoglycan?
What the cell wall of a prokaryotic cell is made of
What are the five parts sometimes present in prokaryotic cells?
Pili, mesosome, plasmid, capsule/slime layer, flagellum
What is the function of the pili?
To attach onto other cells or surfaces, not for movement.
What is the function of the mesosome?
The infoldings provide a large surface area on which chemical reactions associated with respiration can occur
What is a plasmid and what does it do?
A short ring of DNA, not involved with cell metabolism or growth that often has genes for antibiotic resistance. It may contain 100 genes or so
What is/What is the function of the capsule/slime layer?
It is a sticky secretion that protects and helps cells stick together.
What is the flagellum?
A single microtubule of protein fibres that is used for movement
What are the five kingdoms of living organisms? (FAPPP)
Fungi, animalia, protoctista, plantae and prokaryotae
What are the bare parts that are always present in any prokaryotic cell?
Cell wall (made of peptidoglycan), cytoplasm, cell wall, ribosomes and genetic material
