How is the Drum Charging process performed in a laser printer?
The Primary Corona wire applies a uniform negative charge between 600 and 1000 volts to the surface of the drum.
Describe the Write and Develop process of a laser printer.
The laser writes a positive charge image, ≈ 100 volts negative, on the drum surface. The charged image on the drum will attract the more negatively charged toner particles, ≈ 200 to 500 volts negative, to develop an image on the drum surface.
Describe the Image Transfer process in a laser printer.
The Transfer Corona wire applies a positive charge to the paper. The negative charged toner image on the drum is transferred to the paper by electrostatic attraction.
Describe the Fuser process in a laser printer
The fuser process fixes the toner to the paper by passing the paper with the toner image between a pressure roller and heat roller. The pressure roller presses the paper from the bottom and the non-stick heat roller from the top to melt the toner to the paper. Then, a static charge eliminator removes the charge on the paper.
Describe the function of the Raster Image Processor chip (RIP) in a laser printer.
RIP takes the digital information from the computer about the fonts and graphics for a page and converts it to a rasterized image of dots to be printed.
In terms of a laser printer, what is RET?
Resolution Enhancement Technology. Enables the printer to insert smaller dots among characters to smooth out jagged curves to create a better quality image.

The Windows operating system considers a "printer" to be a program that controls one or more print devices.

From the desktop select;
>Start >Settings >Printers and Faxes >Add Printer |

To control the hardware
What materials are used to make toner for a laser printer?
A polymer bonded to Iron Oxide particles.
What is the purpose of the iron oxide particles in toner?

What is one of the most important troubleshooting steps you can perform in evaluating poor print output from a printer?
Perform a diagnostic print page
How can a diagnostic print page be generated from a printer?
Usually by holding down the On Line button dur
If a laser printer printout is blank, what is the most likely problem.
The printer is out of toner.
If a laser printer printout is blank and the printer does have toner, what would be the next logical step(s)?
Perform a diagnostic print page. If that is blank, remove the toner cartridge and examine the drum for an image. If present, suspect a bad HV power supply or transfer corona. Then, consult the manufacturer's guide for assistance.
What does a dirty appearence printout from a laser printer usually indicated?
A dirty fuser roller
What is the most likely cause of ghosting images on a laser printer printout?
Imaging drum did not fully discharge, or the cleaning bar my be worn.
What action(s) could correct undesired vertical white lines in a laser printout?
Try shaking the toner cartridge to evenly disperse the toner, especially if its low. Or, replace the toner cartridge.
What action(s) could correct for a blotchy printout?
Try shaking the toner cartridge, side-to-side, to evenly disperse the toner. Verify the printer is level or if blotch is consistant or regulay, chack the fusing roller or drum for foreign objects.
What action(s) could correct for spotty laser printouts at regular intervals?
Check the drum for surface damage and replace it if necessary or check the fuser roller for stuck toner and wipe it of if possible.
What action(s) could correct for embossed effect on laser printouts?
Check the pressure roller for a any foreign object. Use 90% denatured alcohol or water and a soft cloth remove it. If the foreigh object is on the drum - replace the toner cartridge. Also, check the contrast control setting - check the manufacturer's guide.
What action(s) could correct for incomplete characters on laser transparency printouts?
Try adjusting the the print density.

What action(s) could correct for a paper jam in a laser printer?
Refer to the manufacturer's guide for paper jam correction procedures.
What action(s) could correct for a laser printer that pulls multiple sheet at a time?
Try replacing the paper with new paper - if this corrected the problem then there may be a humidity problem. Check the separation pad for shiny and well worn - this pad separates the sheets as they are pulled from the tray.
What are some generaly guidelines for print media for a laser printer?
