What is printmaking?

Printmaking is a technique developed to create multiple copies of a single image. This allows for ideas, images, and iconography to reach large numbers of people.
What is the history of printmaking?
Print making evolved from china from the 9th century. By the 11th century the Chinese used movable type . The technology came to Europe from the need to copy inexpensive religious icons and playing cards. By the 19th century photomechanical methods began replacing movable type.
What are some basic terminology of printmaking?
Numbers such as 10/25 indicate how many prints (impressions) are in the edition and which edition the print is.
The artist's proof (AP) prints are made for the artist for their own record or use before the final edition is run
What is relief printing and what are the three types of relief printing?
In relief printing the printmaker cuts away all those parts of the surface not meant to carry the ink. The surface is then inked and the ink is then transferred to paper with pressure from a piece or other means by hand. The three types are wood block/cut, wood engraving and linoleum cut.
What is the opposite of relief printmaking and what are some examples?
In intaglio printing areas below the surface hold the ink. It is Italian for "to cut into." It is done by cutting, scratching or etching the surface. An example of Intaglio is Elizabeth Catlett's sharecropper.
What is engraving and what is an example?
It is a sub form of the Intaglio process. In engraving lines are cut into the polished surface of the plate with a burin or engraving tool. We can see the richness of Albrecht Durer's The Knight, Death and the Devil.
What is etching and what is an example?
In etching acid resistant ground is put on a metal plate (copper or zinc). Drawing lines cut through ground. Acid bites into the plate where lines are exposed. The more acid the deeper the lines. An example of etching is Christ Preaching.
What is the name of an etching process used to obtain shaded areas in black and white or color prints? What is an example of this?
Aquatint. An example would be Goya's Disaster of War.
What material does lithography use, what impact did it have and what are some examples?
It is in a sense "stone writing" because it is a surface or planography that is based on mutual antipathy of oil and water. It could be produced quickly and easily It became the main illustration of newspapers posters and handbills before the printing press. Some examples are Rue Transonan and Jane Avril.
