RATIONAL NUMBER
Any number that can be written as a fraction.
WHOLE NUMBERS
The numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} etc. There is no fractional or decimal part. And no negatives.
INTEGERS
THE SET OF WHOLE NUMBERS AND THEIR OPPOSITES. {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...}
REAL NUMBERS |
The type of number we normally use, such as 1, 15.82, -0.1, 3/4, etc. Positive or negative, large or small, whole numbers or decimal numbers are all Real Numbers |
NEGATIVE INTEGER |
Less than zero. A negative number is written with a minus sign in front Example: -5 is negative five. |
POSITIVE INTEGER |
Greater than zero.(Negative means less than zero. Zero is neither negative nor positive.)Example: 5 is positive five. Sometimes abbreviated "+ve"The values to the right of zero on the number line are all positive: |
ABSOLUTE VALUE |
How far a number is from zero. Example "6" is 6 away from zero, but "-6" is also 6 away from zero. So the absolute value of 6 is 6, and the absolute value of -6 is also 6. The symbol "|" is placed either side to mean "Absolute Value", so we write: |-6| = 6 |
SUM
THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO AN ADDITION PROBLEM
DIFFERENCE
THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO A SUBTRACTION PROBLEM
PRODUCT
THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO A MULTIPLICATION PROBLEM
QUOTIENT
THE RESULT OR ANSWER TO A DIVISION PROBLEM
PLUS
A SYMBOL USED FOR POSITIVE INTEGERS
MINUS
A SYMBOL USED FOR NEGATIVE INTEGERS
ZERO
IT HAS NO SIGN. The whole number between -1 and 1, with the symbol 0 Shows that there is no amount
EXPRESSIONS
Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something. Example: 2×3 is an expression
OPERATIONS
A mathematical process. The most common are add, subtract, multiply and divide (+, -, ×, ÷).
OPERATORS
An Operator is a symbol (such as +, -, ×, etc) EVALUATE- TO CALCULATE THE VALUE OF. SOLVE
EQUATION
An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign "=" like this: 7 + 2 = 10 - 1 OR 3X + 5 = 11
VARIABLES
A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable.
CONSTANTS
A fixed value. In Algebra, a constant is a number on its own,Example: in "x + 5 = 9", 5 and 9 are constants
EXPONENTS-
The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. In this example: 8^2 = 8 × 8 = 64 (The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a multiplication.) ANOTHER NAME FOR EXPONENT IS POWER.
BASE
The number that is going to be raised to a power. Example: in 8^2, 8 is the base
VINCULUM
The horizontal line used to separate the numerator and denominator in a fraction. It can also be any horizontal line placed over an expression to show that everything below the line is one group.
