Cause # 1 of increased ICP:
Hemorrhagic Stroke |
Hemorrhagic stroke -- cerebral artery in the brain bursts -- blood leaking out of vessel takes up space in the cranium -- also causes cerebral edema -- this results in an increase in ICP
Cause # 2 of increased ICP:
Epidural Hematoma (cerebral contusion) |
Trauma to the head -- causes epidural hematoma -- skull fracture and localized collection of blood between the skull and dura matter -- cerebral edema -- takes up space in the skull and puts pressure on brain -- results in increased ICP
Cause # 3 of increased ICP:
Glioblastoma - intracranial tumor |
glioblastoma takes up space in the skull and puts pressure on the brain -- also causes edema -- results in an increase in ICP
Clinical Manifestation of an Increase in ICP # 1:
Headache |
Headaches can indicate and increase in ICP -- the underlying cause of the increased ICP (tumor) puts pressure on the brain or brain stem -- causes a headache
Clinical manifestation of increased ICP # 2:
Projectile Vomiting |
Projectile vomiting can indicate an increase in ICP -- increased ICP can put pressure on the brainstem and this is what causes projectile vomitting
Clinical manifestation of increased ICP # 3:
Eye changes |
An increase in ICP puts pressure on the cranial nerves -- this causes changes in the eyes (pupil dilation) -- changes in eyes can indicate increased ICP
Exercise to treat Alzheimers:
Cognitive exercise |
Site: Neurons
Mechanism: cognitive exercise -- stimulates neuron g.f. -- delays the progression of neuron degeneration -- treats alzheimers by delaying symptoms and slowing progression |
