How many people moved to the UK from Poland between 2004 and 2007?

Over half a million people

A big number ...

Push factors from Poland?

High unemployment - 19%

Low average wages about 1/3 of average EU wage.

Housing shortages - just over 300 dwellings for every 1000 people.

Pull factors to the UK?

Ease of migration- UK allowed unlimited migration from the EU in 2004 (it later became restricted in some EU countries but not Poland)

More work (high demand for tradesman like plumbers) and higher wages

Good exchange rate (the pound was worth a lot more than polish currency)

Impacts on Poland?

Economic- shortage of workers in Poland, slowing the growth of the economy.

But Polish economy was boosted by the money sent home from emigrants around 3 billion was sent to Poland in 2006.

Social- most people who left Poland were young. This led to an ageing population.

But the young people who left didn't need houses or jobs any more, which helped with the housing shortages and unemployment problems.

Impacts on UK

Economic- immigration boosted the UK economy

But a lot of the money earned in the UK was sent back to Poland.

New polish shops opened to serve polish communities

Polish workers pay taxes that help support the uk's older retired people.

Social- some people were unhappy about the large numbers of polish immigrants.

Political- politicians changed the policy on immigration to the UK because people were unhappy about the immigrants.

How has the UK changed how it manages immigration?

Immigrants from Poland aren't limited but they have to register under the workers registration scheme so that the UK can monitor the type of jobs they are taking and the effect on the economy.

People thought UK didn't have enough recourses like houses or jobs so UK limited immigrants from newer EU states like Bulgaria and Romania they now have to get permission from home office to work in the UK ( and is only granted for certain types of jobs)

What is the brain drain?

Happened in Poland after it lost all its most educated and talented skill full workers to other countries like the UK through migration.

It is when the country has no skillfull clever people left so people like doctors leave seeking better quality of life which puts pressure on health services since there are less nurses and doctors to go round...
