Which cranial nerve innervates the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
CN V11(chordae tympani)

posterior 1/3- CN 1X(glossopharyngeal)
back of throat/epiglottis
CN X (vagus)
What is the pathway for taste?
CN V11, 1X and X enter the medulla and travel caudally to the solitary tract and synapse on second order taste neurons in the solitary nucleus. Ascend from there ipsilaterally to ventral posteromedial nucleus of the thalamus and onto the taste cortex.
How are olfactory receptors unique?
They are the only neurons that are replaced throughout a persons life.
Which CN mediates olfaction?
CN 1
What role does CN V play on olfaction?
It innervates the olfactory epithelium which detects noxious or painful stimuli.
What structure do the olfactory nerves pass through that whwn damaged can induced hyposmia and anosmia?
Cribiform plate
Which part of the brain are olfactory receptor neurons?
They are a direct part of the ipsilateral telencephalon and do not relay in the thalamus.
What are the second order olfactory neurons?
Mitral cells
Where does the output of the second order olfactory neurons go?
To the prepiriform plate
Describe the transduction of olfaction.
1. Olfactory receptor neurons bind odorant molecules
2. Activate G proteins
3. Activate adenylate cyclase
4. Increase intracellular cAMP
5. Na+ channels opened
6. Depolarization of receptor potential
