What type of excretory cells are found in the stomach? Where are they found?
Oxyntic cells- deep regions of gastric pits
Mucous secreting cells- located in the neck region
Chief cells cells- deep aspect of gastric pits
What are the two types of secretions produced by the stomach? How does the composition change with the secretory rate?
Parietal juice- acidic produced by oxyntic cells
Alkaline juice- sodium rich produced by mucous cells.
Composition of gastric juice becomes more acidic, with more chloride and hydrogen and less sodium, as the rate increases.
What are the three secretions from the oxyntic cells?
Hydrochloric acid
Intrinsic factor
Gastroferrin
How is hydrochloric acid secreted from oxyntic cells? How is it neutralized?
Active process via proton pump.
Neutralized by secretions by the pancreas, liver and intestines.
What is the function of intrinsic factor?
Complexes with vitamin B12 to allow for absorption in the ileum
What is the function of gastroferrin?
Complexes with iron in the stomach to facilitate absorption in the small intestine.
What is the function of pepsin?
Proteolytic enzyme that digests protein.
Hydrolyzes peptide linkages.
Secreted as pepsinogen.
How is pepsinogen activated?
Acid and more pepsin activate pepsinogen to pepsin.
What substances are absorbed in the stomach?
Aspirin and alcohol
