asthma

disease characterized by increased airway resistance due to hyper constriction of the smooth muscle

mild asthma

exercise or cold induced; tx is sympathetic agonist (albuterol)

moderate asthma

allergen induced; tx with albuterol and/or anti-histamine (bendadryl)

severe asthma

extenstive inflammation in the upper airways caused by prostaglandins, histamines, and leukotrienes; must treat the inflammation (corticosteroids such as prednisone)
