Forces between objects

•Force can change shape or motion or state of rest of an object

•Unit of force is Newtons

•Objects always exert equal and opposite forces on each other when interacting

Resultant force

•Resultant force is single force which has same effect as all forces acting on object

•Accelerating means presence of resultant force

Force and Acceleration

•Bigger reultant force, greater acceleration

•Greater mass, smaller acceleration for a given force

•F=m x a (a is acceleration)

On the road

•Friction and air resistance oppose driving force of car

•Stopping distance depends on braking distance and thinking distance

Falling objects

•Weight of object is force of gravity on it (i.e. not mass)

•object acted on by only gravity accelerates at 10m/(s squared)

•Terminal velocity of falling object is when weight is equal to drag force on object

Stretching and Squashing

•Extension is difference between original length and current length

•Extension of spring is directly proportional to force applied provided doesn't exceed limit of proportionality)

•Spring constant of spring is force per unit extension needed to stretch it

Force and speed issues

•Fuel economy of road can be improved by reducing speed or fitting wind deflector

•Average speed cameras are linked in pairs and measures average speed of vehicle

•Anti-skid surfaces increase friction between a car tyre and road surface
