what is a wave?
A wave is a disturbance moving through a material. Imagine a long elastic rope lying on a flat table, with one end tied to a fix point. IF you move the other end from side to side a pulse travels aling a rope. The diagram on the left shows the shape of the rope at different instants.

what causes a wave?
You may have seen what happens uf you topple a line of donimos. As each one falls it knocks the next one over and so on right down the line. This is not a wave however just a single pulse. But now imagaine that the dominos are hinged at the bottom end and connected to each other at the top by springs
