Efficiency

The efficiency of a device is the percentage of how useful an object is. For example, a lightbulb is not 100% efficient. This is because some of the energy comes out as heat which is not the intended purpose. Therefore it is not 100% efficient.

Efficiency can be calculated using this eqaution:

efficiency= useful output energy transfer (divided by) total input energy transfer

Is energy wasted? How?

Energy transfers

When energy is transferred to an object, the energy is stored in one of the object's energy stores. You can think of energy stores being like buckets that can be poured into or taken out of.

Transfers of energy.

Conservation of energy

Energy can't be created or destroyed, only transferred between energy stores.

Transfer of energy.

Gravitational potential energy

Lifting an object in a gravitational field requires work. This causes a transfer of energy to the gravitational potential energy store of the raised object. The higher an object is lifted, the more energy is transferred to this store.

The amount of energy in an object's store depends on its mass, height and the strength of the gravitational field the object is in.

Mass, height and strength of the gravitational field.
