Aperture
The aperture is the size of the opening in the lens through which light is allowed to pass when the shutter is opened – the larger the aperture, the more light passes through. The aperture is measured in ‘f-stops’ .A larger aperture has a smaller f-number and a smaller aperture has a larger f-number (e.g. f/22). Each time you change the f-stop, the light meter needs to be checked because the needle needs to fall near the center. |
Shutter
The shutter speed, measured in seconds, is the amount of time the shutter stays open when taking a photograph. The longer the shutter stays open, the more light passes through to the sensor to be captured. There's a ring on the lens that needs to be rotated to make the subject comes into focus. |

How to make a good quality print from your negatives
You place the film in the negative holder that can be found in the enlarger then, you focus the image on a dummy piece of paper. Once the image is focused you cut up strips of paper and use these as test strips. That will show you different times of exposure, and then you can develop and view the test strip in full light to judge what the correct exposure should be and later expose your paper.
