Aperture |
Hole in the lens that controls how much light is sensored affects depth of field. Small number small range (ex. A picture in someone's hands) large number is large range (ex. Mountain) |
Aperture f stops |
4.5 5.6 6.7 8 9.5 11 13 16 19 22 27 32 |
Shutter speed |
Mainly deals with motion. Slower objects slower speed faster objects faster speed. |
Depth of field |
The amount of image that is in focus |
Exposure triangle |
Shutter speed, iso, and aperture |
Aperture and shutter speed |
If you increase one and decrease the other you get the same amount of light in (or exposure levels) |
Typical shutter speed |
1/60th second anything slower and the camera is subject to camera shake. Typical will vary depending on the length of the lens. 1/60th is for basic 50mm lens |
Tripod use |
When shutter speed is less then 1/60th second. To prevent camera shake. |
Low shutter speeds purpose |
For low light to get as much ambient or natural light as possible. |
Bulb mode |
Keeps your shutter open as long as you press it down. For low light settings. |
Speed up shutter 1 stop |
Either increase aperture 1 stop or choose faster iso rating (iso100 to iso400) |
Iso |
The lower the number the list the sensitivity of the image sensor and the finer the grain. ( definition differs from film to digital photography.) |
Questions to ask on iso adjustment |
1. Light. Is the subject well lit? 2. Do I want a grainy shot or one without a lot of noise? 3. Tripod: am I using a tripod? 4. Moving subject: is my subject moving or stationary? |
Circumstances to highten iso |
Low light, no flash zones Indoors Nice moody shot where you don't want to ruin the moment with a bright flash. |
Street photography |
Fast shutter speeds lower appeture (f8 f11) do get much depth. Shutter speed 1/250 shade 1/400 1/500 for direct Sunshine 1/160, 1/125 for darker situations Higher iso to allow these settings and level out triangle |
Photo settings in snow |
Take RAW pictures Move your focusing point to a dark point Choose evaluative metering (if really sunny partial or spot) +1 or +2 exposure compensation Shoot in aperture priority mode Keep batteries warm Bag the camera when coming back inside to prevent condensation. |
Photo layering |
Add layering to your shot by placing something in front of the camera ahead of your focus. Examples a leaf, window, bars, fence, etc. |
Dynamic zoom burst |
Where light fans exposure between half a second and 2 seconds long. Use tripod Zoom out during shot in dark Zoom in during shot during daylight |
Sun flare |
Soft sun flare use larger aperture(smaller numbered) for a stronger sun flare use smaller aperture.(larger number) Aperture priority mode Use an object to hide the sun move around the object to get different views Soft flare with no point put sun out of frame |
Water drop |
F11 aperture 8000 shutter speed iso 2000 separate flash on opposite side |
