Antecubital Fossa
The portion of the arm that is in front of the bend of the elbow. The most prominent veins for venipuncture are located in this area.
Anticoagulant
Chemical substance that prevents the blood from clotting.
Basilic Vein
The vein on the little finger side of the arm running the length of the arm.
Buffy Coat
Layer of cells in an anticoagulant tube of blood that is positioned between the RBC's and plasma layers. Consists of WBC's and platelets.
Centrifuge
Instrument that spins and separates blood into layers depending on the weight of the layer. The heavier elements are pushed to the bottom due to centrifugal force.
Cephalic Vein
The vein on the thumb side of the arm running the length of the arm. Second choice for venipuncture.
Diastolic
Blood pressure when the heart is at rest. Blood refills the ventricles.
Endocarditis
Infection of the inner membrane of the heart.
Erythrocytes
Formed blood element; also known as red blood cells.
-transports 02 and CO2 with hemoglobin
-formed in bone marrow
-size 6-7 micrometers (no nucleus)
-life span 100-120 days
-removed in bone marrow, liver, and spleen
Leukocytes
Formed blood element; also known as white blood cells.
-body defense
-formed in bone marrow and lymphatic tissue
-size 9-16 micrometers; eosinophils, neutrophils, and basophils (granular) monocytes and lymphocytes (agranular)
-life span 24 hours-years
-removed in bone marrow, liver, and spleen
Median Cubital Vein
The vein in the antecubital Fossa area of the arm that bridges the cephalic and basilic veins. Easiest to palpate and used the majority of the time in venipuncture.
Occluded
Blocked, preventing a normal flow of blood.
Plasma
Fluid portion of the blood when no clotting has taken place. Contains fibrinogen.
Pulmonary System
System circulating blood through the lungs.
Serum
Fluid portion of the blood after clotting has taken place.
Systemic System
System circulating blood throughout the body with the exception of the lungs.
Systolic
Blood pressure when the heart is fully contracted.
Thrombocytes
Formed blood element; also known as platelets.
-stops bleeding
-formed in bone marrow from megakaryocytes
-size 1-4 micrometers
-life span 9-12 days
-removed in spleen
Blood Draw Calculations
-150lb adult = 5L total blood
-2.2lb infant= .100L total blood
-2.5% blood max per draw
-5% blood max per 30 days
-blood contains 45% formed elements and 55% plasma
Arteries vs. Veins
Arteries
-carry oxygenated blood from the heart
-Bright red color
-Elastic walls expand with blood surge
-No valves
-smooth muscle in tunica media for dilation and constriction
-can feel a pulse
Veins
-carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
-dark red color
-less elastic walls
-valves
-no pulse
Complete Blood Count (CBC) Components
WBC's (differential), RBC's, Platelets, Hemoglobin, and Hematocrit
