Sensory Neurons
- at spinal cord: all sensory neurons are from neural crest
- in head: sensory neurons also from ectodermal neurogenic placodes * olfactory placodes (SVA) * epibrachial placodes ( SVA) * otic placodes (SSA) |
skeletal muscle
- at SC skeletal (striated muscle is from somites (myotmes) innervated by GSE
- in head, skeletal muscle is also from brachiomeres ( paraxial mesoderm that populates branchial arches) innervated by SVE or BE |
Neural crest
- from bone and connective tissue
GVA
- visceral sensation receptors in endoderm derived structures
GSA
- (pain, temp, pressure) receptors in ectoderm derived tissue
GVE
- smooth muscle, blood vessels, glands
- 2 neuron system |
GSE
- innervates striated muscle from myotome of somite
In head nerves
- in head skeletal muscles is also from brachiomeres
- paraxial mesoderm that populates the branchial arches (innervated by SVE * special to head * visceral because the branchial arches also called visceral arches - SVE voluntary - SVE also known as BE (Branchial efferents) |
Hos SVE different from GSE
- differ in location of nuclei in brain
Each arch has...
1. Cartilaginous component: from neural crest
2. muscular component: branchiomeric muscle: striated: innervated by SVE (BE) 3. artery- aortic arch 4. cranial nerve- associated with each (V, VII, IX, X) |
After Birth
- larynx and epiglottis grow away from soft palate so that simultaneous nursing and breathing no longer possible
Tongue
- note that floor of pharynx contributed by 2nd arch overgrown by 3rd arch
- so posterior 1/3 of the tongue is innervated by 3rd arch nerve (glossopharyngeal) - there is no sensory nnervation of mucosa b facial nerve (except for taste) |
