Weathering chain of events |
Erosion, transportation, deposition |
Mass wasting |
Movement of debris due to only gravity |
Physical weathering types |
Unloading (pressure differences in the rock and at the surface), freeze/thaw, salt crystal growth, biotic |
Chemical weathering definition |
Chemical reactions b/t rocks and environment |
Chemical weathering types |
Oxidation, solutions, carbonation, hydrolosis, thermal expansion/contractions |
Chemical weathering usually takes place in.... |
Warm and wet places |
Physical weathering usually takes place in... |
Cold and dry places |
Creep |
Caused by heating and cooling of soil, moves rocks very slowly. Most common form. |
Solifluction |
Soil flow. Slow dowmnslope movement of soil or regolith. Makes waves. |
Falls |
Materials quickly falling through the air. Form a pile called a scree or talus. |
Avalanches |
Powerful wave of powdered material quickly sliding downhill. Often caused by rockfalls or snowfalls. |
Slides |
Cohesive rock or soil making continuous contact with the slope as ot slides straight down. Usually caused by water. |
Slumps |
Like slides, dislodged material follows a curved path. Usually in humid areas. Top part is more vertical. |
Flows |
Rock/mud debris saturated with water. Like slides, but the material mixes while moving downwards. Can be caused by flooding water pouring downhill. If caused by volcanoes, called Lahar. |
