Cecil Calvert (Lord Baltimore)

1605-1675, was the first Proprietor and Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland

Toleration Act 1689

An act granting freedom of worship to the dissenters (excluding Roman Catholic and Unitarians) on a Certain condition. Purpose was to unite Protestants under William II and against Roman Catholic James II.

Rodger Williams

Roger Williams was an English Protestant theologian who was an early proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. In 1636, he began the colony of Providence Plantation, which provided a refuge for religious minorities.

Anne Hutchinson

Anne Hutchinson, born Anne Marbury, was a Puritan spiritual adviser, mother of 15, and an important participant in the Antinomian Controversy that shook the infant Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638.

Antinomianism

in modern times is commonly seen as the theological opposite to Legalism or Works righteousness, the notion that obedience to religious law earns salvation. This makes antinomianism an exaggeration of justification by faith alone.

Halfway Covenant

is a form of partial church membership created by New England in 1662. It was promoted in particular by the Reverend Solomon Stoddard, who felt that the people of the English colonies were drifting away from their original religious purpose.
