What does the Panama Canal connect?
The Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.
Who had the first idea? When? Why?
Spain in the 1500s (16th century) Because gold was not moving fast enough back to Europe because they had to go all the way around the Americas
Who was the first to actually start building? Why did they stop?
France started building, but they stopped because it was expensive, they were in the middle of a war, and they were getting attacked by native tribes and a big reason was because so many people had died from mosquitos carrying yellow fever and malaria.

The U.S. in 1904 when Theodore Roosevelt was president.
How long did it take them?
10 years, from 1904 to 1914. (They originally thought it would take 15 years)
How did they overcome the problems the French faced?
William Gorgas, a U.S. army physitician invented vaccines and mosquito nets to stop the deaths from yellow fever and malaria, and drained swamp to avoid mudslides
How long did the U.S. control the Panama Canal?
From 1914-1979, then in 1979, when Jimmy Carter was president, we jointly controlled it. Then finally Panama got full control in 1999
How many miles do save by going through the Panama Canal?
7,800 miles are saved on the average trip.
Name some of the problems facing the building of the Panama Canal?
Diease (yellow fever and malaria), mudslides, geography (going through mountainous areas and rainforests), native attacks, and financial backing?
How was Panama able to get the canal?
Panama had to rebel against Colombia (who ruled them in 1904) to get the canal because they did not agree with it. We gave them supplies for war.
