What are the 10 cylinder care rules? |
1) Handle, Store and use cylinder in an upright position. Secure each cylinder to a wall post using chain or strap
2) When transporting use a properly designed cylinder cart. Use chain or strap to prevent tipping
3)Replace safety cylinder caps after every use to protect the valves
4) Use hand pressure to open Oxygen cylinder valves. Never Wrench! Open Acetylene with key supplied
5) Never roll cylinders horizontally or use them as rollers to move a load
6)Store Oxygen and Acetylene separately, at least 20 feet away from each other and any combustible material
7) Do not store cylinders in areas with hot temperatures because internal pressure could ride to dangerous levels 8) Store full cylinders away from empty cylinders 9)Fully open Oxygen cylinder to prevent leaks around the valve 10)Open Acetylene cylinder only 1/4 to 1/2 turn so it can be shut off in an emergency

What are the 3 kinds of lights in welding? |
Ultraviolet InfaRed Invisible |
|
What are the 3 kinds of flames in oxywelding? |
1) Neutral-Balanced 2)Carbonizing-More Acetylene 3) Oxidizing-More Oxygen |
|
Name 2 functions of the torch? |
1) To control the mix of oxygen and fuel gases within the mix chamber of the torch
2) To direct the flame to the welding, brazing or soldering area |
|
What are 5 parts of a torch? |
1)Body or Handle 2)Tip 3)Mixing Chamber 4)Regulator Valves 5)Hose |
|
OxyGas Welding Equipment |
Acetylene Cylinder Oxygen Cylinder Oxygen Regulator Acetylene Regular Two lengths of colored hose, green for oxygen or red for acetylene Torch Body Two flashback arrestors |
|
What are the setup procedures |
1) Secure and fasten cylinders with straps or chains
2)Crack open cylinder valve quickly to blow out dirt 3)Connect pressure regulator to cylinder nozzle. Oxygen are right handed threads. Acetylene are left handed. Regulators should be threaded with hand and tightened with wrench 4) Attach hose to the respective regulators. Oxygen green. Acetylene red 5) Attach the torch to the other end of the hose by hand tightening 6) Select desired welding tip and attach it to hose

What is a carborizing flame? |
Carborizing flame contains more acetylene than oxygen. The carborizing flame has a lower temperature than the neutral flame. It is often used to weld steel because the high Carbon content I'm the flame is absorbed by hot steel |
|
What is oxydizing flames? |
A type of flame that contains more oxygen than acetylene |
|
What is a neutral flame |
A flame that has a balance of oxygen and acytele |
|
What are the 7 steps to lighting a torch? |
1. Check to see if oxygen and acetylene torch valves are closed by turning them clockwise
2. Turn Oxygen and Acetylene regulator screws counter clockwise and moves freely. Do not turn to far
3. Slowly open Acetylene cylinder valve 1/4 to 1/2 turn in counter clockwise direction. Use proper valve wrench to shut off in an emergency (Do not stand in front)
4) Slowly open Oxygen cylinder as far as it will go
5) Set the correct working pressure on acetylene regulator gauge. Close acetylene torch valve. Repeat step 5 process for oxygen
6)Open Acetylene torch valve 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Use a spark lighter, light acetylene gas. Just flame until it burns 3/4 from torch tip
7) Slowly open Oxygen torch valve until small point appears at torch tip. This a neutral flame

|
What is Acetylene temperature |
5589 F- 3087 C |
|
What is Hydrogen temperature |
4820 F - 2260 C |
|
What is natural gas temperature? |
4600F -2638C |
|
What is Propylene temperature |
5250 F- 2900 C |
|
Write Acetylene scientifically |
C2 H2 |
|
What are the 6 steps to shutting off torch? |
1) Close Acetylene Torch valve first to extinguish flame. Then close oxygen valve 2) Close oxygen and acetylene cylinder 3)Open both torch valves to release gas still in hose 4) Watch each pressure regulator until you see it read 0 5. Once it reads 0 close both torch valves and put torch away 6. Turn adjusting screws on both regulators counter clockwise |
|
What does AWS mean? |
American welding accossiation |
|
What is backfire? |
A momentary recession of flame in the torch. Potentially causing flashback |
|
What is a signal of backfire? |
It is usually a popping sound |
|
What causes backfire? |
When welding tip is dirty or too close to the work |
|
Name Two welding techniques? |
1) Forehand method 2)Backhand method |
|
Explain forehand method? |
Forehand method is when welding moves from right to left(for right handed person) The welding filler metal is moved ahead of the torch tip away from the completed portion of weld |
|
How many degrees is the torch tilted in forehand method |
15 degrees to preheat |
|
What kind of tip is needed from forehand method |
A small tip |
|
What is Backhand welding? |
Backhand welding is used on thick material for good joint penetration. Right handers start left and go right. The torch angle depends on the material thickness |
|
3 steps to preparing joints? |
1. Joint must be selected according to the job requirements 2. Joints must be prepared for welding(measured, cut or machine beveled) 3. The surfaces and edges of joints must be cleaned in order to allow for strongest weld possible |
|
Why are weld joints prepared? |
To give deep penetration while keep edges true or straight |
|
What Is the thickness of sheet metal? |
1/8th |
|
What can easily cut steel plate 1/8 to 3/8 thickness |
Power saw or hacksaw |
|
Two methods of cleaning steel before welding are? |
Grinder Wire brush |
|
8 parts of a cutting torch? |
1. Torch tip 2. Torch nut 3 Torch head 4. Torch body 5. Preheat oxygen control valve 6. Cutting oxygen control valve handle 7. Torch oxygen control valve 8. Torch acetylene control valve |
