Bone

Supports & protects soft tissues of the body

Collagon

Large protein molecules that constitutes 90% of bones organic content (Gives bones flexibility)

Hydroxyapatite

Dense inorganic material that stiffens the collagen of mature bones ( gives bone rigidity)

Bone modeling and remodeling

Bone is laid down, maintained, & remodeled

Osteoblasts

Produces the organic portion of bone matrix (osteoid) which is later mineralized

Osteocytes

Osteoblasts that become surrounded by bone matrix (mature bones cells responsible for bone maintenance & communication)

Osteoclasts

Cells that dissolve or resorb bone (large cells with acidic border that diminerizes bone tissue & enzymes that dissolve collagen)

(Surface of bone) Periosteum

Thin tissues on outer surface of bones (missing in dry bones)... Tough, vascularized membrane that nourishes bone... contains bone-forming cell

Endosteum

Membrane on inner surface of bone... contains bone forming cell

(Form of bone) Trabecular (spongy) bone

Irregular framework of bony spicules

(Form of bone) Compact (cortical) bone

Dense bone that covers the trabecular bone

Haversian Canals

Narrow trenches aligned with long axis of bone that contains nerves & blood vessels

Volkmanns Canals

Short transverse Canals connecting Haversians Canals to another (Canalioculi)

Haversian System or osteon

Entire set of circular layers of bone surrounding a single Haversian Canal

Lacunae

Small cavities found within each lamella containing an Osteocryte

Canaliculi

Transports nutrients to osteocytes

Types of bones

Long bone

Short bone

Flat bones

Irregular bones

Short bones

Trabecular bone covered by thin layer of compact bone

( wrist and ankle

Flat bones

Composed of two layers of compact bone covering a thing layer of trabecular bone

Sagittal plane

Cut body from left and right

Coronal plane

cut body from front and back

Transverse plane

Cut body from top & body
