What is the heart?

A pumping organ made of muscle to keep blood flowing around the body. It has valves to stop blood flowing backwards.

How does the heart work?

1. Blood flows into the two atria from the vena cava and pulmonary vein



2. Atria contracts forcing blood into the ventricles



3. Ventricles contract pushing the blood into the aorta and out the heart



4. Blood flows to organs through artieries and returnd through veins



5. Repeats

What are the 3 types of blood cells?

Veins - Carries blood to the heart


Arteries - Carry blood away from the heart


Capillaries- Involved in exchange of materials at tissue

What are the Arteries like?

They have strong and elastic the walls are thick compared to the lumen.

What are capillaries like?

Small and permeable to make diffusion easier. Walls are usually only one-cell thick

What are veins like?

Big lumen to help bloodflow and have valves to make sure blood the flow in the correct direction.
