Trigonal Planar |
Flat molecule CH2O |
|
What are the four intermolecular forces? Describe them |
1. Electrostatic - Attractive force between ions of opposite charge, Same force in ionic bonds but between molecules, STRONG FORCE 2. Dipole - Dipole - Delta plus, Delta minus (H2O) Interaction betwen D+ and - of polar covalent bonds from dif. mol. (Like electrostatic however it is smaller in magnatude) 3. Hydrogen bonding - A special type of dipole dipole interacting due to large dipoles between H D+ and Electronegative elements (O,N,S) (Best example is water) 4. London Dispersion force (LDF) - Weak interactions due to transient polarization of nonpolar bonds - Transient meaning rapid weak sloshing of electron density towards one side of a bond making it for a moment a little polar |
|
Order the four intermolecular forces from strongest to weakest |
1. Electrostatic, H-Bonding, Dipole-Dipole, LDF |
