What infection does parvovirus B19 cause?

Parvovirus b19 is a single stranded DNA virus and the only known host of this virus is human beings. It causes the infection erythema infectiosum or fifth disease.

What are the symptoms of a parvovirus B19 infection?

Classically parvovirus B19 causes the "slapped cheek" rash. Otherwise patients have flu-like symptoms, low grade fever, malaise, arthralgia, and symmetric polyarthralgia especially in the hands.

How is parvovirus B19 transmitted?

Parvovirus B19 is found in respiratory secretions and is thought to be transmitted via these secretions via hand-to-mouth contact as well as infected blood products or transplacentally.

What percentage of pregnant women show parvovirus b19 immunity?

50%

What percentage of pregnant women show seroconversion of IgG to parvovirus b19?

1%

How do you diagnose a parvovirus b19 infection in pregnant women?

Checking for seroconversion.

For parvovirus b19 what is the incubation period? What is the time frame for appearance of IgM antibodies? And what is the time frame for appearance of IgG antibodies?

The incubation period for parvo virus infection is about 1 week. IgM antibodies appear 2 weeks after infection. IgG antibodies appear 3 weeks after infection.

What is the vertical transmission rate of parvovirus b19?

Maternal to fetal transmission is estimated to occur in 17 to 33% of maternal infections in pregnancy.

What are the risks to the fetus with vertical transmission of parvovirus b19?

Typically, the fetus is not affected by maternal parvovirus infection. However they can have a higher risk of fetal death during early pregnancy about 8 to 17% when diagnose from 9 to 20 weeks. It can also cause non immunologic hydrops in the fetus.

How is non immunologic hydrops fetalis caused by parvovirus b19 treated?

Intravascular transfusion of the fetus may have a beneficial effect on parvovirus associated non-immune hydrops fetalis and is most often curative.

How is parvovirus b19 infection of the fetus diagnosed?

Amniocentesis a followed by PCR testing for parvovirus b19. Remember parvovirus is a single stranded DNA virus.
