What is new castle disease by definition?

An infection of poultry caused by an avian strain of paramyxovirus type 1




With a pathogenicity index of over 0.7 in day old chicks

What signs do we get with ND?

Respiratory and enteric.




Highly infectious and infect susceptible birds of all ages.

Pathogenesis of ND?

Single stranded RNA surrounded by mantle of fat.




Replicates in the epithelium of the respiratory tract and ailementary tract.




Viraemia after one dya followed by rapid multiplication in most internal organs.




Virus survives in faeces for weeks.




Vertical transmission possible.

On confirmation of ND on a farm what occurs?

Declare an infected area consisting of a 3km protection zone.




10km surveillance zone.




Other poultry units subject to restrictions in movements and operating.




The 3km zone is in place for a minimum of 21 days after the infected farm has done its preliminary cleansing and disinfection.




When the above fulfilled integrated into the 10 km surveillance zone.

When can a farm restock itself with brids after a ND outbreak?

After completed its final clean and disinfection and 21 days have lapsed.




Restock with vaccinated birds.




These birds are cloacal swabbed and sent for virus isolation.

If you suspect paramyxovirus OF PIGEONS what do you do?

Similar signs to ND with nervous signs and watery green diarrhoea.

After APHA has been contacted what happens?

APHA vet will check to see if other poultry present.

If disease suspected restriction notice served.

When are movement restrictions lifted in a loft with pidgeon paramyxovirus?

60 days after clinical signs

What causes Psittacosis?

Chlamydophila psittaci.




Zoonotic!

If poultry have Psittacosis signs what occurs?

Signs of diarrhoea, pyrexia, anorexia.




Contact APHA.




APHA decides to slaughter or not.




If not slaughtered then clean and disinfection required and owner required to tell APHA when birds are free from clinical signs.




After 28 days free from disease restrictions are lifted.
