Edward the Confessor - King of England - died with no children - closest relative died mysteriously that year.

William Duke of Normandy - strong soldier - experience of ruling Normandy - good friends with Edward.

Harald Hardrada- King of Norway - his ancestors had once ruled England - Harold Godwinsons brother Tostig supported him

Harold Godwinson - Earl of Wessex, a powerful and rich English nobleman. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Edward named Godwinson as his successor on his deathbed. The next day, the royal council, known as the Witan, met and declared Godwinson king.

The witan - most important men in England who were to choose the next king.

Oath - Edward apparently swore an oath on Holy bones to make William king of England, and also promised Harold the throne on his death bed.

Senlac Hill - near Hastings where the Battle took place on October14, 1066

Battle of Stamford Bridge - 25 September 1066. Harald Hardrada is beaten by Harold Godwinson after taking York.

William used Cavalry soldiers - these were better as faster and had height advantage.

Shield wall - used by Harold at Hastings to defend. successful until men started chasing Norman soldiers running away.

Harold Godwinson was killed - apparently by been shot in the eye - as shown in the Bayeux tapestry.
