CLIMB INTO TRUCK

KEYS IN POCKET, NOTHING IN HANDS, USING 3 POINTS OF CONTACT, CLIMB INTO TRUCK, SHUT DOOR, AND PUT SEATBELT ON. TAKE KEYS OUT OF POCKET.

PARTS OF AIR BRAKE TEST

INSERT KEY AND PERFORM THESE TESTS:


ABS FUNCTION. APPLIED. LOW AIR. EMERGENCY. (IN-CAB) GAUGES INSPECTION. TUG-TEST. SERVICE BRAKES TEST.

THE ABS FUNCTIONS TEST

TURN KEY TO "ON POSITION" AND SAY: "MY ABS LIGHT WENT ON, AND THEN OFF" (THIS TELLS ME THAT MY ABS IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY). TRAILER MAY NOT HAVE ABS.

SAFE START TRUCK #1

SAY: "I WILL NOW PERFORM A "SAFE START". 1) BOTH OF MY PARKING BRAKES ARE ON,


2) TRUCK IS IN NEUTRAL,


3) CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.


1, 2, 3, I CAN NOW SAFELY START THE TRUCK ENGINE. THEN SLOWLY LIFT OFF THE CLUTCH.

WAITING FOR THE SNEEZE NOISE

SAY: "I WILL WAIT UNTIL MY AIR PRESSURE REACHES 120 - 140 PSI AND I HEAR A SNEEZE NOISE INDICATING THAT MY AIR TANKS ARE FULL AND THE GOVERNOR CUT OFF IS WORKING. I WILL PRESS THE ACCELERATOR TO 1000 RPM AND FILL THE AIR TANKS FASTER. I NOTICE THAT MY ENGINE TEMP IS ON THE RISE AND MY OIL PRESSURE INCREASED."

I HEARD THE SNEEZE NOISE

AFTER SNEEZE NOISE, DEPRESS THE CLUTCH AND PUT THE TRUCK INTO 1ST GEAR. WITH CLUTCH STILL DEPRESSED, TURN OFF THE TRUCK. WHEN ENGINE STOPS, SLOWLY RELEASE THE CLUTCH. TURN THE KEY TO "ON POSITION" AND SAY "I HEAR THE BUZZER".

THE APPLIED TEST

SAY: "AFTER AIR LOSS FROM PUSHING VALVES, I WILL PUT MY FOOT ON THE SERVICE BRAKE AND HOLD IT. I WILL TIME FOR 1 MIN & I SHOULD NOT LOSE MORE THAN 4 PSI’S, TIMING IT NOW" (DEPRESS SERVICE BRAKE WITH FOOT WHILE SAYING "TIMING IT NOW"). UPDATE EVERY 15 SEC. UP TO 60 SECS.

THE LOW AIR TEST

SAY: "I WILL NOW START MY LOW AIR TEST. I WILL CONTINUE TO FAN/PUMP DOWN MY BRAKES, AND BEFORE 60 PSI, MY LIGHT AND BUZZER WILL COME ON INDICATING I HAVE LOW AIR.

THE EMERGENCY PUMP DOWN TEST

SAY: "I WILL CONTINUE TO FAN/PUMP DOWN MY BRAKES AND BETWEEN 40 AND 20 PSI’S MY TRACTOR PARKING VALVE AND TRACTOR PROTECTION VALVE (TRAILER) WILL POP OUT" (EYES ON THE VALVES) VALVES POPPED OUT MEANS THAT IT IS THE END OF THE AIR BRAKE TEST.

SAFE START

LET AIR PRESSURE BUILD. WHILE IT BUILDS, CONTINUE WITH THE REST OF MY IN CAB INSPECTION AND END WITH TUG TEST AND SERVICE BRAKE TEST.

SAFE START TRUCK #2

TELL EXAMINER: "I WILL NOW PERFORM ANOTHER "SAFE START".


1) MY PARKING BRAKES ARE ON BECAUSE I WATCHED THEM POP OUT,


2) TRUCK IS IN NEUTRAL,


3) CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.


1, 2, 3, I CAN NOW SAFELY START THE TRUCK ENGINE." THEN SLOWLY LIFT OFF THE CLUTCH.


CAB INSPECTION


OVERHEAD COMPARTMENT, MIRRORS, GLASS WIPERS.

THERE IS NOTHING IN THE OVERHEAD COMPARTMENT THAT CAN FALL OUT AND INTERFERE WITH MY DRIVING. ALL MY MIRRORS ARE CLEAN AND ADJUSTED TO MY LIKING. ALL DOOR WINDOWS ARE CLEAN AND NOT CRACKED OR BROKEN. WIPERS ARE FLUSH AGAINST MY WINDSHIELD.

CAB INSPECTION.


WINDSHIELD.

MY WINDSHIELD IS NOT CRACKED, BROKEN OR MISSING. IF THERE WERE A CRACK, THAT CRACK COULD NOT BE MORE THAN 1 INCH. THERE IS NOTHING OBSTRUCTING MY VIEW. THERE ARE NO ILLEGAL STICKERS. MY INSPECTION STICKER IS UP TO DATE.

CAB INSPECTION.


DEFROSTER/HEATER, DASH, AND FUSE BOX.

MY DEFROSTER ON BOTH HOT AND COLD, “FUNCTIONS.” (MOVE HAND TO WINDSHIELD AND SHOW THEM). MY DEFROSTER VENTS AND DASHBOARD ARE BOTH FREE OF DEBRIS AND OBSTRUCTIONS. MY FUSE BOX IS SECURED CLOSED, AND I HAVE SPARE FUSES FOR EVERY FUSE.

CAB INSPECTION.


OIL, WATER TEMP. GAUGES.

SAY: "MY OIL GAUGE FUNCTIONS, IT RISES AND FALLS WITH RPS. I WILL MONITOR MY WATER TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND IT SHOULD BEGIN TO CLIMB TO NORMAL OPERATING RANGE (180-200F)"

CAB INSPECTION.


TACH, SPEEDO, FUEL AND AIR GAUGES.

SAY: "TACHOMETER FUNCTIONS, IT RISES AND FALLS WITH ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I WILL MONITOR SPEEDO WHEN I MOVE THE VEHICLE. MY FUEL GAUGE READS ___ A TANK. I WILL CONFIRM LEVEL WITH STICK TO VERIFY ACCURACY. BOTH MY PRIMARY AND SECONDARY AIR GAUGES, FUNCTIONS AS PER AIR BRAKE TEST."

CAB INSPECTION.


WIPER/WASHER, HEADLAMP, PARKING VALVES.

SAY: "MY HI AND LOW WIPER SWITCH, FUNCTIONS. MY WASHER SWITCH, FUNCTIONS. MY LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS, FUNCTIONS. MY HI- BEAM HEADLIGHTS FUNCTION. MY PARKING VALVES ARE NOT CRACKED, BROKEN OR LEAKING."

PEDALS.

SAY: "I HAVE NO MORE THAN 2 INCHES OF PLAY IN MY CLUTCH PEDAL. ALL OF MY PEDALS ARE FREE OF GREASE, OIL, OR DEBRIS. THE RUBBER ON MY PEDALS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND MY ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS NOT STICKING. THERE IS NOTHING UNDER MY PEDALS THAT WILL INTERFERE WITH MY DRIVING."

FLOOR

FLOOR, SHIFT TOWER.

SAY: "THERE IS NOTHING ON THE FLOOR THAT WILL ROLL UNDER MY FEET AND INTERFERE WITH MY DRIVING. MY SHIFT TOWER IS NOT BENT CRACKED OR BROKEN AND THE RANGE SELECTOR FUNCTIONS."

TUG TEST YELLOW OUT, RED IN.

ENGAGE CLUTCH IN AND PUT THE TRUCK IN 1ST GEAR. PULL OUT THE YELLOW PARKING VALVE AND PUSH IN THE RED EMERGENCY TRAILER BRAKE VALVE AND SAY: "I AM GOING TO TUG ON THE TRACTOR BRAKES."


DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH SLOWLY AND MAKE THE TRUCK GENTLY MOVE A LITTLE.

IN CAB INSPECTION.


TUG TEST YELLOW IN, RED OUT.

PUSH IN THE YELLOW PARKING VALVE FOR THE TRACTOR BRAKE ONLY.


SAY TO EXAMINER: "I AM GOING TO TUG ON THE TRAILER BRAKES."


DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH SLOWLY TO MAKE THE TRUCK GENTLY MOVE A LITTLE.

IN CAB INSPECTION.


SERVICE BRAKE PEDAL TEST.

WHILE STILL IN 1ST GEAR, WITH A FOOT ON THE SERVICE BRAKE FOOT PEDAL, AND A FOOT ON THE CLUTCH PEDAL, PUSH IN BOTH THE RED AND YELLOW VALVES. SAY: "I AM GOING TO MOVE THE TRUCK FORWARD AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 5 MPH AND DEPRESS CLUTCH AND BRAKE HARD."

IN CAB INSPECTION.

ROLLING BRAKE TEST.

WITH MY HANDS ON THE WHEEL, TELL EXAMINER: "MY WHEEL DID NOT MOVE INDICATING THAT MY STEERING AXLE BRAKES ARE PROPERLY ADJUSTED."

END OF IN CAB INSPECTION.


KEYS BACK IN POCKET.

SET PARKING BRAKES AND PLACE IN 1ST GEAR. TAKE OUT THE KEYS AND PLACE THEM IN YOUR POCKET. 3 POINTS OF CONTACT DISMOUNT VEHICLE.
