Concussion

Injury to the brain due to impact


Concussion scales-memory, HAs, pupil size, eye tracking, cognition, balance

Brain contusion

Bruising or swelling of the brain, commonly subdural hematoma

Spina Bifida

Defect in Spinal column where spinal cord protrudes outside of the vertebrae

Hydrocephalus

Overproduction of CSF (cerebral spinal fluid), head swells


Treated with a shunt to drain excessive fluid

Cerebral Palsy

Damage to the cerebral as a fetus


Presents with lack of motor coordination, some more severe

Alzheimer's Disease

Degeneration of neurons in the brain


Poor memory, safety issues

Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis

Degeneration of motor neurons leading to loss of muscle control and eventually death.

Multiple Sclerosis

Patches on the brain due to destruction of the myelin sheath


Symptoms include muscle weakness, unsteady walking, and paresthesias (tingling)

Parkinson's disease

Disease in neurotransmitters in the brain


Symptoms include tremors, muscle weakness, difficulty walking, "freezing" episodes

Paralysis

Loss of movement or sensation in part of the body. common with spimal cord injuries or traumatis brain injuries


Hemiplegia- paralysis to one side of the body. Typically due to a stroke.


Paraplegia- paralysis to 2 limbs, typically LEs


Quadraplegia- paralysis to 4 limbs, both LEd and UEs
