What is the difference between postural stability and postural control?
Posture stability= COM within BOS
Postural control= ability to control body's position in space (stability, coordination, orientation) |
What are the 3 sensory components of balance?
Visual
Vestibular Somatosensory/proprioception |
What is the vestibular spinal reflex? (2 forms, medial and lateral)
protective response
Medial- cervical and UE protective extension Lateral- UE and LE protective response |
What is the reticulospinal tract involved in?
involved in alertness/arousal and anxiety/nausea
What are the names of the two otoliths and what motion can they sense?
Saccule- vertical motion
Utricle- horizontal motion |
How many semicircular canals are there, name them, and order them in likely hood for getting BPV?
1. Posterior canal
2. Horizontal canal 3. Anterior canal |
What is VOR gain?
What is normal? |
If you move your head a certain degree your eyes should move in an equal and opposite direction.
Ratio of 1 is normal |
What is VOR cancellation?
The ability of your eyes to follow in the same direction of your head, by overriding VOR reflex via the parietal lobe
What two main arteries branching off of the vertebral arteries supply the vestibular system?
PICA and AICA
What is vertigo?
Sensation of spinning/rocking/tilting
What is oscillopsia?
'slow frame rate'
appearance of things jumping i.e. blair witch project |
What is electronystagmography?
EMG of extraoccular eye muscles
How is head righting response tested?
Pt sitting on tilt board being perturbed laterally, look for head remaining vertical
How is head motion provoked dizziness tested?
Pt sitting on table, turns head vertically and horizontally and reports symptoms. Retest while sitting on foam. Also, rule out cervicogenic dizziness by having stationary head on spinning stool
How do you test for oculomotor function?
Saccades, smooth pursuits, convergence/divergence
How do you test for gaze stability with head turns (VOR)?
Pt keeps eyes focused on non-moving target while head rotating side to side
How is visual dependency tested?
standing w/ narrow BOS, ask pt to follow target including diagonals, observing for excessive sway
How is somatomsensory dependency tested?
Pt standing on compliant, anrrow, unstable, or perturbed surfaces. Observe for imbalance
How is visual motion hypersensitivity tested?
Observe for dizziness or nausea during oculomotor testing
How is head position provoked dizziness tested (BPV)?
Dix-Hallpike test and Roll test
