What are the three layers of the meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater
Where are the meninges found?
In the CNS surrounding the brain and spinal cord
What type of information is transported through the dorsal root?
Sensory
What type of information is transported through the ventral root?
Motor
How is it possible to predict the results of injuiries to localized areas of the spinal cord?
test reflexes to see which are abnormal
What are the two main types of nerves?
motor and sensory
What is a nerve plexus?
complex interwoven network of nerves
Why are nerve plexus important?
they combine sets of spinal nerves that control the same area into one large grouped nerve
What is a reflex?
involuntary(autonomic) motor response to a specific stimulation
Compare and contrast simple and complex reflexes. Give example of each.
Simple- stretch reflex; delivering info from peripheral receptors to cns and motor fibers carrying commands

complex- hand on stove; interneuron between sensory(afferent) and motor (efferent) neuron
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system?
controls smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands, and adipose
What are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Parasympathetic and sympathetic
Compare and contrast the functions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.
Parasympathetic- converves energy; promotes sedentary activities
Sympathetic- increased muscle tone, metabolic rate, heart rate, alertness; flight or fight response
What anatomical and physiological changes occur in the nervous system as we age?
reduction in brain size and weight; reduction in the number or neurons; decrease in blood flow to brain; changes in synaptic organization; intracellular and extracellular changes in the CNS neurons
Explain the reflex arc.
1. arrival of stimulus
2. activation of sensory neuron
3. information processing in CNS
4. activation of motor neuron
5. response by effector
